Actually, it's a gem: gentle, eccentric, possessed of a distinctive sort of Gomes's playing on colonialist past and its taboo contrasting with the make-believe nature of the African part of the film is just brilliant. Tragic yet uplifting, daring in it's minimal Mysterious and visually striking, Tabu rewards audiences' patience with a swooning romance shot with experimental flair. Review: Tabu The pangs of romance, eroticism, anguish, and longing transcend any period of cinema Tabu may evoke. Film review – Tabu (2012) 17 May 2013 Thomas Caldwell Film review One comment Ventura (Carloto Cotta) and Aurora (Ana Moreira) Under the veneer of civilisation, what ancient desires and impulses lie in our unconscious, waiting to surface like a crocodile patiently waiting for its opportunity to strike? Nagisa Oshima 's "Taboo" tells a story set in the late Japanese samurai period of the 1800s, when a youth of unusual beauty is admitted into a training program for warriors, stirring lust among his comrades and even a superior officer. When the film premiered at Cannes in May 2000, the joke was that it would be retitled "Not to Ask, Not to Tell." F. W. Murnau’s Tabu demonstrates itself to be a rather straightforward tale, albeit with some Interesting production history which included him tutoring the natives to labour as the film crew. It's chiefly a Romeo and Juliet tale set on a small island in the South Pacific which Murnau captures in glorious monochrome with Floyd Crosby‘s Directed by Vincent Coen, Jean-Julien Collette.

"Tabu" is not a bad film, at least, entirely. It is made of an introduction presenting a sort of legend about a lady ghost and a crocodile, and two short films. While different in plot, according to what I read, "Tabu" is inspired by a 1931 film with the same title and split in two parts with the same names as well. It's always exciting when a new sequel is released. You get to see your favorite characters once again in a new — or not so new — storyline.
