2 Jan 2019 sanguinicola can be associated with human infections, particularly urinary tract infections. Susceptibility testing requires special conditions, so

The most distinguishing characteristic of Aerococcus sp. is their gram stain morphology of large GPCs in This report describes the clinical sources and phenotypic characterization of 16 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola.Sixteen conventional tests were used to describe and differentiate the 16 isolates of A. sanguinicola from 30 strains of Aerococcus viridans, 27 strains of Aerococcus urinae, and a single strain each of Aerococcus christensenii and Aerococcus urinaehominis. Aerococcus sanguinicola is sensitive to most antibiotics likely to be used for empirical treatment of septicaemia such as β-lactams and vancomycin [ 5 ]. However, A sanguinicola has often reduced susceptibility to fluoroquinolones [ 1, 3, 5 ]. High-level fluoroquinolone resistance has also been described [ 11 ]. Aerococcus urinae and Aerococcus sanguinicola are newcomers to clinical and microbiological practice. The first report on A. urinae was published in 1989 (14) and the name designated in 1992 and A.sanguinicola was named in 2001 . A retrospective chart review was performed on 92 patients from whom 118 isolates of Aerococcus sanguinicola (n = 52) or Aerococcus urinae (n = 66) were obtained from urine cultures between October 2007 and June 2008 to assess clinical presentation and antimicrobial susceptibilities. The mean patient age was 82 (range 24–101) years. Most Aerococcus species will grow in Salt Broth but A. sanguinicola is the only species that is usually Bile Esculin (+). Commercial ID systems have limited abilities to ID A. urinae/A. viridans and will not recognize A. sanguinicola.

In this study, we present population-based data regarding the prevalence of aerococci in clinical urinary samples. During a 3-month period, all aerococcal isolates from urinary samples from 2 clinical microbiology laboratories were collected. We identified 64 Aerococcus urinae isolates and 40 Aerococcus sanguinicola isolates, which correlates with an incidence of 33 cases of aerococcal

doi: 10.1128/genomeA.00302-16. Aerococcus bacteriuria is known to be common amongst the elderly, with a female predominance . The majority of urinary isolates are Aerococcus urinae (55–66%) followed by Aerococcus sanguinicola (26–46%).

We present here the biochemical and genetic characterization and antimicrobial susceptibility of 58 isolates of Aerococcus viridans isolated in pure culture from different clinical specimens of normally sterile body sites of pigs. A. viridans isolates were commonly susceptible to-lactam antimicrobials and exhibited a great genetic

Aerococcus urinae is a fastidious Gram-positive coccus most frequently associated with urinary tract infections (UTIs) but also with bacteremia and endocarditis (). A. urinae is classically described as resistant to trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT) (3, 6, 14, 15, 19); however, in a previous study (), we observed 98.8% susceptibility to SXT among 80 clinical A. urinae isolates when we Complete genome sequences of Aerococcus christensenii CCUG 28831 T, Aerococcus sanguinicola CCUG 43001 T, Aerococcus urinae CCUG 36881 T, Aerococcus urinaeequi CCUG 28094 T, Aerococcus urinaehominis CCUG 42038 B T, and Aerococcus viridans CCUG 4311 T.
